Ohio Veterans' Bonuses Not Taxable

Following urging from U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) stated definitively that veterans’ bonuses are not taxable income, citing IRS Revenue Ruling 68-158.

“Nothing is more important than honoring Ohio veterans. The men and women of the armed forces have been made a promise that if they defend our country in military service, we will provide them with the benefits they have earned,” Brown said. “Veterans in Ohio must receive benefits in a manner befitting their service, and that includes receiving bonuses that are not subject to income taxes.”

The state of Ohio authorized a $200 million bond for one-time bonuses for an estimated 200,000 veterans. Veterans who served in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf can receive $100 for each month of service, up to a total of $1,000.
