Local Online Forum Raising Funds to Sponsor Youth Team
The Mid-Ohio Speakeasy, an online forum based in Marion dedicated to local events, opinion writing, and free speech, is holding a fund raiser to sponsor a little league team with Marion’s Baseball for Youth program for the 2012 season. The Mid-Ohio Speakeasy hopes to raise at least $250 by Friday, February 10, 2012 to cover the cost of sponsorship. Site members will then be able to vote on a name for the team.
Site administrator Spencer Phelps says he has several motivations for wanting to sponsor a little league team through his site.
“First, it’s a great way to give back directly to the Marion community. Who doesn’t like the idea of kids playing baseball in the summer? It’s also going to be great fun on our site. We’re going to write articles on our front page about how our team did,” he describes. “Also, the games themselves will serve as mini meet and greets for the dozens of members we have on our site. Plus the whole name voting process in itself is going to be a blast.”
Registered members will be allowed to suggest and vote on the team name. (Registration is free.)
Contingency plans have been setup in the event the site does not raise enough money or raises too much.
“If we don’t reach our goal, everyone will get their money back,” said Phelps. “If we somehow get way more [donations] than we thought we would, we’re going to contact baseball programs in surrounding counties like Crawford and Morrow and sponsor a team there so we can represent more of the Mid-Ohio region.”
